Amelia Island 2010
The 15th Annual Amelia Island Concours D'Elegance took place this year on Sunday
March 14th, 2010. With the promise of good weather and the eclectic mix of 225
interesting vehicles assembled by Mr. Bill Warner, the temptation to attend was
just too much for this car guy. We arrived on Friday and were treated to the
hospitality of the RM auction preview and cocktail reception. On Saturday we
attended the RM auction and watched the Mercedes-Benz brand values hold very
well. A 1955 "Gullwing" from the O'Quinn collection sold for $687,500
and a beautiful 1955 300b sold at $112,750. In the lobby of the Ritz -Carlton
was a replica of the Benz "Patent-Motorwagen" and out front was the
Mercedes-Benz display that featured both the new "Gullwing" and the
new E-Class Cabriolet. Saturday night was a pleasant dinner with fellow enthusiasts
at the gathering of the Peachtree Section of the M.B.C.A upstairs
at the Crab Trap. Our Minuteman Section was well represented by four guests.
Sunday was the Concours and a record crowd of over 18,000 people
turned out. On the field was serious eye candy with no shortage
of our beloved marque. There were seven, yes seven, pre-war supercharged
Mercedes-Benz. This was rumored to be the largest display of pre-war
supercharged Mercedes-Benzes ever in the Northern Hemisphere. Surrounding
them were five "Gullwing" s and an award winning
W194 factory race car. "Best of Show" was a 1937 540K
Special Roadster in beautiful DB180 Silver. If you share the "car
disease", as Alex
Finigan recently called it on a tour of Paul Russell and Company,
a trip to Amelia Island to kick off the show season is well worth
your time. I hope you enjoy the pictures...........Ed
